Can I use an external mechanical keyboard with an iMac instead of the Apple keyboard?

i like imacs but hate apple keyboards and need an external mechanical keyboard. is it better to swap the mechanical for the apple keyboard or just get a monitor and a mini? or is there another way to have an apple desktop without an apple keyboard?

iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and most any other Mac will work fine with most any external USB keyboard, whatever the particular key switch technology used.

The keyboard will best be either Bluetooth, or USB-C, as USB-A will need a dongle.

It is convenient to have an Apple keyboard, or at least a third-party one with Apple labels for the modifier keys. But even one with Windows modifier key labeling should work.

Note that if you get a gaming keyboard that has software-controlled color backlighting for individual keys, the software to support the lighting effects might be designed for Windows only.
