Double-click to open files not working on MacBook Air running macOS Monterey

double click to open file not working in macos Monterey 12.7.6 macbook air,

Neither pdfs nor ms docs/excel files are being launched while double clicking,

only going through home page of the ms doc or excel i am able to open any saved file, not by clicking on them directly.
