wow, in 2007 a man asked how to change the orientation of text in a table in Pages.

Vertical Text in a Table - Apple Community

it's now 2026. Is it possible now? Haven't been able to find anything about it.

Because Pages isn't a Word clone, it has never had the ability to rotate text in a table cell. If you need that capability then I recommend doing so in either of LibreOffice Writer, or Microsoft Word.

Although one can lock the individual rotated text boxes that are hovering over the table cells, if the table itself is moved in the document, those locked text boxes do not move with the table. Same deal if they are unlocked. And locking the entire table simply prevents it from moving and a forcing to stay on page.

Though technically feasible to create a table with apparent rotated cells, I didn't mention this approach as I felt the average person who wants this effect, would not want the involved effort and limitations previously mentioned.

Honestly, it not being a Word clone is no reason for missing such a basic function. Especially when this has been asked for a zillion times. If I wanted to use Word, I would have used Word. 🥲

Actually it is. Apple is not competing with other word-processing vendors on market share, or features. The original Pages design goal was a consumer-grade word processing application, not prosumer, or professional as 42 years of evolution have made MS Word.

If Apple had wanted to engineer rotational text in a table cell, they would have done so. Your zillion may have been those asking to automate table to text and the reverse, or non-contiguous text selection, but I recall very few requests for rotating text in a table cell over the last few years.

More important than using Word is to use the word-processing application that fullfills your document content goals. You have options beyond Pages.

It’s not “pro” to be able to make a small table for a boardgame I’m playing at home. The text doesn’t fit because it’s horizontal. I don’t need a text editor for more than once or twice a year. I don’t want to have to look for other options.

But it’s fine. Apple can’t do anything wrong, you’re totally right.
