Numbers charts not editable when pasted into Keynote

Hi,

I recently updated to the newest version of Numbers, and I’ve run into a problem. When I copy charts generated in the updated Numbers and paste them into Keynote, the charts are no longer editable—they come in as regular images rather than editable charts. This is quite inconvenient for my workflow, since I often need to adjust the chart data directly in Keynote.

I am surprised Apple did this. Is this a known issue, or is there a setting I may need to adjust?

Thank you for your help.

Yes, this is a known compatibility bug introduced in recent updates of iWork where copying vector charts from Numbers  causes them to drop their native object data and paste as flattened images into Keynote There is no hidden preference toggle to fix this; instead, you must rely on alternative workflows to keep charts dynamic

Modify chart data in Keynote on Mac - Apple Support

Try this

  • Create the chart natively in Keynote: Copy the raw data table from Numbers, paste the cells directly into Keynote's built-in chart data editor (Edit Chart Data), and let Keynote generate the editable chart.
  • Drag and drop the sheet or object: Instead of using standard Cmd+C and Cmd+V, try dragging the chart object directly from your Numbers window onto the Keynote slide canvas if your macOS version supports the inter-app gesture
  • Update and edit via Numbers: Keep the master chart inside your original Numbers file, make data updates there, and re-import or re-create the final visual if adjustments are needed.
