iPhone 17 US model network compatibility in Nepal

I am interested in purchasing an iPhone 17 from your store, but I would like to make sure that the US market model works well in Nepal. I live in Nepal and use Nepal Telecom's network, so I want to know the network compatibility before purchasing.

Please clarify the following:

Is the iPhone 17 sold at Walmart 'unlocked' for international use?

Is there any process to unlock it before using it in Nepal or not? Or Nepal Telecom will activate it.

Does its hardware support Nepal Telecom's network?

I will have been able to decide if you have advised me.

Thanks

iPhone 17

This is a user-to-user forum. Apple largely is not here, except to moderate it – so if you're expecting them to give you official answers in these forums, you will be waiting a very, very long time.

My understanding is that Apple won't ship an iPhone to a country or region other than one for which it is intended. As for buying a phone from another retailer, like Walmart, buying an iPhone meant for a different country or region than the one in which you will be using it may be a bad idea, given

  • the warranty restriction
  • the possibility of getting a phone locked to a U.S. carrier
  • possible customs or import fees or taxes that may reduce or negate perceived savings

That said …

For iPhones that are currently in the online Apple Store's "new" lineup, this Support document indicates which 5G and LTE frequencies each variant of each iPhone supports.

If a phone is locked to some carrier other than Nepal Telecom, Nepal Telecom won't be able to unlock it. Only the carrier to whom a phone is locked can remove the lock.

You need to purchase the iPhone directly from the Apple Online Store or an Apple Retail Store if you want a truly unlocked device that is not tied to any carrier.

Retailers like Best Buy and Walmart do not sell “International Unlocked” iPhones. They sell Universal iPhones, which are compatible with international carriers, but the device may still be subject to the unlocking policy of the carrier with which it was first activated (such as [Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T]).

Once the carrier’s unlocking requirements are fulfilled, the iPhone can be used with other domestic or international carriers. However, it is not the same as purchasing a factory-unlocked iPhone directly from Apple, which is unlocked from the beginning and not associated with any carrier activation.

All iPhone models are world phones, so you can use them almost anywhere. Whether you are a GSM or CDMA network customer, you can roam internationally on GSM networks in over 200 countries or regions around the world. Availabilitys of LTE data varies in some countries or regions and depends on carrier support for certain LTE radio frequencies. Contact your wireless carrier for more information regarding international roaming policies and rates.

Note the following 2 important points.

Nepal does not have a separate Nepal-specific App Store storefront with Nepalese currency as the billing currency. The App Store availability and payment options depend on the Apple Account country/region settings. For Nepal, Apple services are available, but App Store purchases are not billed in Nepalese Rupees (NPR); the supported billing currency/payment methods depend on the selected region.

If you want to make purchases on an iPhone, you need to set your Apple Account country/region to a supported region and use a payment method accepted for that region. Simply having Nepalese currency or a Nepal-based bank account does not automatically make it usable for App Store payments.

You are always “safest” purchasing any iPhone in the country where it will be primarily used.

The “worst case scenario” is that a local carrier might simply refuse to activate a “foreign” device on their network.

Or you might be “buried” with requirements to provide any number of bureaucratic “import certifications.”

Or … it might all be “just fine.”

Other potential issues have already been included in previous replies; eSIM-only and carrier lock being sizable potential stumbling blocks.

Approach w/ caution.
