The beauty of it is that you don't have to do anything for the firmware to update as long as the AirTag is in Bluetooth range of the iPhone. Do you know the firmware version of your AirTag?
If you mean something completely different like updating its location, like ALL Bluetooth trackers that is only possible when there is another bluetooth device within range to transmits its location. The AirTag, like the other bluetooth trackers, is not a GPS tracker that is able to maintain constant communication to satellites for location updates. You can find those, but they are much bigger, may require data plan, and require frequent battery replacements.
In any case, you are not required to use an Apple AirTag at all and there are many other manufacturers that you can choose from. You should always be purchasing the product that works best for you. Nobody here cares if you are not using an Apple product, you just won't find support for those products here.
People buy Apple products because they like them, their features, are easy to use, while at the same time receive some of the highest Customer Satisfaction ratings. The question you may need to ask yourself is why are you buying them?
