for the love of God please tell me how to make my very expensive phone ring. iphone 17. the ringer button silences things but when it is on the **** phone doesn't ring. explain it to me as though I just graduated from using a rotary dial phone NOT like I am a tech sis. Thank you.

Silencing the phone with the mute switch silences most sounds, including calls ringing.
Silence iPhone - Apple Support
The mute switch doesn’t turn off the haptics — the vibration — so the phone will still vibrate, and this vibration can be felt.
If you want your phone to ring, don’t silence it with the mute switch.
If you want finer control over what makes noises and what doesn’t, you can use what Apple calls a “focus”.
The “do not disturb” setting is one example of a “focus”m and you can enable and disable it, and can customize it.
You can set a focus to cause the phone to ring for any call, or to ring only for calls from specific people, for instance.

Turn off Silent mode.

You can't take a rotary dial phone to a movie theater or a doctor's office and make and receive calls on your home phone line from that rotary dial phone. So there was never a need to have "mute" or similar controls on rotary dial phones for the purposes of keeping them from disturbing other people at such places.
With cell phones, there is a good chance that you will have your phone on you, and that it will work in these places, even at times when it would be inconvenient for those around you. Thus, controls to silence calls, or to make your phone vibrate only.
Likewise, if you are on a commercial flight that's taking off or landing, the pilots or airlines or regulators might not want your cell phone sending signals that have a chance (even a remote one) of interfering with instruments, and helping to cause a crash. So you might be asked to turn off your cell phone or to place it into "airplane mode".
