My tablet had the “White screen of death, but still had instructions visible to push the “Home button “. Was I hacked?

Far more likely a software bug or a hardware problem.
Here is a reset operation to try: If your iPad doesn't respond - Apple Support
Hold the Home button and top button until the Apple logo appears, continuing to hold both past any sliders or such.
