Unable to add apps to Dock on iPad Air 2 with iPadOS 15.8.8

iPad Air 2 / iPadOS 15.8.8: Cannot put apps in Dock

I recently "restored" my iPad Air 2 – erased, installed fresh latest iPadOS 15.8.8. I've run into a problem trying to set it up like it was before: I can't put apps in the Dock. Ever since my first iPad in 2012, I've always put my most used apps in the Dock for quick access. But when I try to drag an app icon to the Dock, it just bounces back to where it is on the desktop.

I've looked in Settings > Home Screen & Dock, but don't see anything to turn on or off about this matter. I tried turning Off "Show Suggested and Recent Apps in Dock", but then the Dock had only the Mail app; I couldn't add any more. Having that option On sort-of works, but the layout keeps changing depending on what apps I've recently used.

I've looked in the iPad User Guide (iPadOS 15), but see nothing about this.

I have an old original iPad Air (iOS 12) I haven't used for a couple years. Started it up, it still works like I remember: I can add and subtract apps on the Dock, set it up as I like.

Can anyone clarify this issue? Is this a new "feature" in iPadOS 15.8.8? I think it had 15.8.4 before the restore. Do I need to do yet another restore? TIA.

Thanks, LotusPilot and WheelieNick.

I've shut down and restarted the iPad several times, and toggled the "Show Suggested and Recent Apps in Dock" setting several times, with no effect.

So I did a Force Restart. Still no fix. So I tried the Settings Reset. Now I can add apps to the Dock, and remove them. Except for one: the Settings app is in the Dock, though I didn't put it there. So I tried to remove it. I can drag it out of the Dock, and the icon stays on the screen where I put it. But then it also reappears in the Dock.

I now have four (4) Settings icons on the screen, and one in the Dock. They all open Settings when tapped. I removed 3 of them. Then did a complete erase & restore.

The previous time I restored the iPad, using the instructions on the Erase iPad page of the iPad User Guide [iPadOS 15] > "Use a computer to wipe all content and settings from iPad" it offered to back up settings and restore them from the backup to the new OS install, and I chose to do that. And was pleased to see the settings included the very long list of Text Replacements I'd created (I use the iPad mostly for keeping a journal). So I didn't have to enter all those again.

But I'm guessing that Settings material that was backed up and restored had some bug in in somewhere that was restored and caused the Dock problem. I did the previous restore because the iPad was generally running poorly and buggy. So now I'm starting from scratch again and willll have to set up the Text Replacements again.

This is not an intentional feature of iPadOS 15.8.8, but rather a temporary software glitch or cache corruption with the SpringBoard interface. You do not need to do another full restore yet. Instead, fix this by restarting your iPad, resetting your Home Screen layout, or toggling the recent apps setting.

Try to force restart the iPad Turn your iPad completely off and on again, or do a hard reset (press and hold both the Top/Power button and the Home button for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears). This clears minor caching errors that cause drag-and-drop actions to bounce back.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

If you are seeing more than one Settings App icon, then you have added additional shortcuts to the same App. This allows you to access the same App (in this case, Settings) from multiple locations - such as different Home Pages, App folders or the iPad Dock. When created, these are included within your device backup along with other device settings.

The additions are easily added from the iPad App Library. Duplicates are just as easily removed by a simple touch-and-hold of the associated icon to expose an Action Menu - and then removed by selecting the appropriate action from the menu.
