On your MacBook Pro, go to  Apple menu  >> System Settings >> Accessibility >> Read & Speak.

Turn on Speak Selection

Then select some text and press Option (⌥) + Esc. Your Mac should read the selected text aloud. Press Option–Esc again to stop.

If nothing happens, return to Accessibility >> Read & Speak >> Speak Selection and click the information button beside it.

Check the keyboard shortcut and make sure a System Voice is selected. You can also use the Play button there to test the voice.

If you still cannot hear anything, check System Settings >> Sound >> Output and make sure your Mac's audio output and volume are set appropriately.
