Target display mode has been fased out years ago, so you cannot do that to use it natively as a display. What you can try is airplay to Mac to use airplay display

That won't work either, at least not without the use of third-party software. A 2017 iMac is one year too old for it to act as an AirPlay Receiver for AirPlay to Mac.

Almost any workaround to make this happen will be laggy. I used Network Screen Sharing to put the display of my M4 Pro Macbook Pro 14" on my 2017 iMac 5K while I was recovering from an eye issue. It worked on a very basic level but I had cursor and other issues. If I had to precision-place or move a graphic in a document, lag was frustrating. Anything with video content slowed things.

I believe the only reason it worked as well as it did was that both computers were only a meter apart and wire-connected to our home network, where I'd recently upgraded all hubs to 10/100/1000 models.

Also, remember that for screen sharing, the iMac will be running all its bits and bobs, using far more energy than a free-standing external monitor. At idle your 2017 iMac is using more than twice the wattage of a 2022 27-inch Apple Studio Display.
