Apple Watch SE (1st gen) on watchOS 10.6.2 cannot finish pairing - setup demands a watchOS update that does not exist

Apple Watch SE (1st generation), 40mm GPS, model A2351, identifier Watch5,9.

Installed: watchOS 10.6.2, build 21U594. This is the final version this model

can run.

Tried with two iPhones:

- iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 26.6

- iPhone 11, iOS 18.5

The watch is fully erased before every attempt.

WHAT HAPPENS

Pairing starts normally. The watch is found, the pair is established, activation

completes. Then the setup assistant moves to the watchOS software update step.

It checks for an update, reports that the software is up to date, and stops

there. There is no Continue button. The only control on the screen is Cancel,

which unpairs and erases the watch, putting me back at the start.

The setup cannot be completed. This repeats every time, on both iPhones.

WHY IT HAPPENS (from the iPhone system logs)

The setup assistant enters the update branch unconditionally, because it cannot

read the installed version from the pairing descriptor at that stage:

checkForUpdatedBuildVersionWithDevice:

Descripter build version: (null) Updated BuildVersion: (null)

Forced Update: NO NoUpdateFoundOfIsComplete: NO

It then scans, finds nothing, retries three times, and goes idle:

Transitioning from (Unknown) to (Scanning)

scanRequestDidLocateUpdate: subState: (Scanning); update: ((null))

No update found.

No update found in setup flow, starting retry 1/3

No update found in setup flow, starting retry 2/3

No update found in setup flow, starting retry 3/3

No update found.

Transitioning from (Scanning) to (Idle)

Blocked going back from controller: COSUpdateWatchViewController

"No update found" is correct. Apple's own asset server has nothing to offer for

this build - a query for Watch5,9 on 21U594 returns an empty asset list, while

the same query for 21U580 (watchOS 10.6.1) correctly returns the 10.6.2 update.

Meanwhile the phone does know the real version over IDS:

IDSDevice properties: modelIdentifier=Watch5,9 productName=Watch OS

productVersion=10.6.2 productBuildVersion=21U594

So the data is available to the system, but the update controller reads it from

a different source that is still empty at that point in the flow.

There appears to be no "no update needed, continue" path out of that branch.

THE ONE TIME IT WORKED

While the watch was still on watchOS 10.6.1, a real update existed. The setup

assistant found 10.6.2, installed it successfully, and moved on to the "Apple

Watch is paired" screen. Once 10.6.2 was installed, that escape route was gone,

because there is nothing left to install.

So the problem only appears once the watch reaches the last watchOS version its

hardware supports. That happened for Series 4, Series 5 and SE 1st gen with the

10.6.2 release in February 2026.

WHAT I HAVE ALREADY TRIED

- Erasing the watch completely, many times, from the watch itself

- Pairing from two different iPhones on two different iOS versions

- Restarting both devices, resetting network settings on the iPhone

- Deleting all Apple Watch backups from the iPhone

- Removing other Bluetooth trackers and watches from the iPhone

- Disabling the 5 GHz band on the router, since this watch is 2.4 GHz only

- Pairing over Wi-Fi and over cellular

- Keeping the watch on the charger and next to the phone throughout

Hardware is fine. The logs confirm working Bluetooth, working Wi-Fi (the watch

obtained a DHCP address from my router), working storage, a successful watchOS

installation, working display and charging.

QUESTIONS

1. Has anyone paired an Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5 or SE 1st generation

after it reached watchOS 10.6.2? If so, what iOS version was the iPhone on?

2. Is there any supported way to get past the software update step when no

update exists for the watch?

3. Apple: in January 2025 the OTA compatibility version was raised from 22 to 24

and pairing broke for these same three models, and it was fixed server-side

the same day. My logs show compatibility version 22 on both sides. Could this

be addressed the same way?

You should visit an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider and let them diagnose the watch, since you have tried all the troubleshooting on the user side.
