FaceTime call transfer not working on MacBook Air with unchecked phone number

I recently upgraded from an M4 MacBook Air to an M5 MacBook Air, and I’m having trouble transferring FaceTime calls between my MacBook and my other Apple devices.

In the past, I kept my phone number unchecked under FaceTime > Settings > “You can be reached for FaceTime at” on my Mac. I left only my Apple Account email address selected because I didn’t want my MacBook to ring for every FaceTime call made to my phone number. Since relatively few people call my Apple Account email directly, this significantly reduced how often my Mac rang.

After upgrading, this setup no longer seems to work the same way. If my phone number is unchecked on my Mac, I cannot transfer certain FaceTime calls between my Mac and my other devices. Once I select my phone number, call transfers work again—but my Mac then rings for every FaceTime call I receive.

Does the phone number used for a FaceTime call have to be selected on both devices for Handoff to work? Or should being signed in to the same Apple Account, with the same Apple Account email selected, be enough?

I’m also curious whether this behavior recently changed, because I believe I was previously able to transfer calls without enabling my phone number on the Mac.

Yes, the contact information (such as your phone number) used for the active FaceTime call must be selected on both devices for FaceTime Handoff to work. Being signed into the same Apple Account with only your email selected is not sufficient if the incoming call was placed to your phone number.
