Problem adding a Genuine Apple Air Tag

Adding genuine apple air tag to my iPhone. Findmy sees the air tag , but get error message. "Review and update security settings." I went to the apple acct settings and updated a new password. that worked but it still wants me to add a backup trusted phone, which I don't have. and have no one I can contact to do this for me. I updated the security 26.6.1 today but that made no difference. Same error message. ??? I've paired other Bluetooth devices such as vehicles What can I do to add this air tag?

Pairing an AirTag is different from pairing a regular Bluetooth device. It has to be registered to your Apple Account through Find My, so the account security warning is the part to resolve first.

Go to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication and check whether your own iPhone number is already listed as a trusted phone number. Apple requires at least one trusted number; a second number is recommended, but it isn’t normally required.

Also check the main Settings > [your name] screen for any Update Apple Account Settings alert and complete that before trying the AirTag again. Apple specifically recommends this when an AirTag won’t finish setup.

I wouldn’t reset the AirTag yet. First I’d get that Apple Account security alert cleared.
