Pages image caption text box won't approach document midline

I am using Pages for a bi-monthly newsletter (Mac Studio, OS Tahoe 26.6.2, Pages 15.3.1). The document is set to one column, but I manually create two columns, so as to have greater layout flexibility. The caption for one image in the right column refuses to approach the document midline beyond a certain point. If I move its text box leftward toward the center line, the caption text retreats to the right inside the text box, maintaining its position in the document. What control feature is governing this behavior?

Place your cursor inside that image's caption box. In the side panel's Caption panel, verify in the Indents section that the First and Left indents remain at 0. I can duplicate what you have shown by setting them both to 0.25 in in the caption box of an inserted image.

The indents were set to 0 as you suggested. In the end, it turned out that there was something defective with that text box. I resolved the problem by copying the text into a TextEdit document and then pasting it into a new text box. After that, I could move the text anywhere I wanted. Very strange! I have never seen this before. Thank you for your insights.

By default, when one inserts an image and selects caption, that adheres a text box beneath the image. That is what I tested because though you didn't explicitly state that you selected caption, you used that term.

One could also insert an image and juxtapose a separately inserted text box below the image without choosing caption, and it now sounds as though that was your approach. The image caption box also allows multi-line text.

So, it would appear that you found a work-around, and on with the newsletter… 😉
