Professional engineering software lacks native Apple Silicon builds
Apple Silicon has the hardware for professional engineering work — but the software ecosystem still leaves entire industries behind
Apple's keynotes and marketing consistently spotlight "pro" workflows in video editing, photography, and music production — and Apple Silicon genuinely excels there. But there's a much broader category of professional software — electronics design, embedded firmware development, PCB layout, FPGA development — where Mac adoption is blocked not by hardware capability, but by vendors simply never shipping native Apple Silicon builds.
Concrete examples our engineering team runs into directly:
- Arm Compiler for Embedded (armclang) — the standard toolchain for professional Cortex-M/Cortex-A firmware development — is still x86_64-only on macOS, five+ years after Apple Silicon launched. It currently limps along via Rosetta 2, which Apple has confirmed will be removed after the next macOS release.
- Altium Designer (industry-standard PCB design) — Windows-only, no native or even emulated macOS path that's practical for daily use.
- Xilinx/AMD Vivado and Intel/Altera Quartus (FPGA development suites) — no native Apple Silicon support, forcing engineers onto Windows or Linux VMs regardless of how capable the host Mac is.
The result: companies doing serious embedded systems, industrial electronics, and hardware engineering (our own work is CNC motion controllers and servo drives) simply can't standardize on Mac hardware for these workflows — not because Apple Silicon can't handle it, but because the tools were never ported.
This is a real opportunity cost for Apple too. These are exactly the "pro" users Apple says it wants — well-funded companies buying multiple high-spec Macs per engineer — but the platform story falls apart the moment their actual toolchain isn't there.
Ask: Apple has real leverage here — developer relations, WWDC partner engagement, and the sheer size of the installed base of Apple Silicon hardware in enterprises. We'd like to see Apple actively push vendors in these underserved professional segments (EDA, embedded toolchains, FPGA design) toward native Apple Silicon support, the same way it's pushed creative and productivity software vendors over the past several years. "Pro" shouldn't stop at content creation — it should include the people designing the hardware everything else runs on.
