Domestic Violence Survivor Needs Help Tracking an Unknown AirTag in Her Vehicle

I can’t find an unknown 2nd generation airtag moving with me. I followed the directions and tried to play the sound. I still cannot find it. It’s somewhere in my car. I am a domestic violence victim survivor. So I really need help. The map shows the location of every place I went.

One possibility the reason that this AirTag is not making a sound, is that the individual removed, or otherwise, disabled the tag's speaker prior to placing it in your car. As such, any attempt to have it make a sound would be thwarted.

If it were me, the following is a list of possible places I'd search on your vehicle, to hopefully, locate the tag. Note that some of these places may require a trusted mechanic or friend to assist you. You may have already searched a number of these.

Inside the passenger compartment:

  • Under the driver's and passenger's seats, especially toward the rear and underneath the seat rails
  • Under/behind the rear seats and inside gaps where the seat backs meet the cushions
  • Inside seat-back pockets
  • Under floor mats and carpeting, including edges that can be lifted
  • In the trunk/cargo area's side compartments
  • Inside the spare-tire well or storage compartment
  • Behind removable trim panels in the trunk
  • Inside the center console and its storage compartments
  • Glove compartment, particularly behind/underneath it
  • Door pockets and the spaces immediately behind interior door panels
  • Under the dashboard, especially around the lower dash/footwell areas

Exterior — this is particularly important:

Use a flashlight and, if possible, a mirror or your phone camera to inspect:

  • Behind/inside the front and rear bumpers
  • Inside wheel wells, particularly behind the plastic liner
  • Behind splash guards
  • Under the vehicle's rocker panels/side skirts
  • Along the underside of the vehicle
  • Around suspension components and frame members
  • Behind/near the spare tire from underneath
  • Around trailer hitches
  • Inside/behind areas where plastic underbody panels meet
  • Anywhere a small object could be attached with a magnet or adhesive

The Apple Support directions are what is available:

What to do if you get an alert that an AirTag, set of AirPods, Find My network accessory, or compatible Bluetooth location-tracking device is with you - Apple Support

In addition to the resources listed in that article, enlisting the assistance of someone with an iPhone or Watch with ultra-wideband precision-finding support might make locating this AirTag easier.

He doesn’t have access to my phone. I got rid of the old phone and the phone number. I also have all new email addresses that are under a different name. The domestic violence advocate has been walking me through the process step by step.

You’ll want to discuss this AirTag with the advocate, and to follow their suggestions around handling all of this, including what they might suggest about campus police, too. Domestic violence cases unfortunately do tend to escalate.

Could it be that they have your location via your phone?

While that is not the cause of an AirTag proximity message, here is how to deal with that (separate) possibility using the info in the personal safety guide, and using Safety Check: Personal Safety User Guide - Apple Support

For those inclined to stalk or harass or abuse, there are other tracking tools available with GNSS / GPS and cellular communications. Tools that are both more capable than AirTag, and that do not report to others on their proximity.

Try the following if you have not already done so:

Watch for an AirTag Found Moving With You alert on your iPhone.

Tap on the alert, tap Continue, and select Play Sound. It is not easy to locate that sound though.

It probably won't help, but you can also try tap Find Nearby and watch the iPhone screen for the location, but you already know that the AirTag is hidden in / on the car somewhere.

They do not have my location via my phone. He may have found my car on campus. I didn’t have time to retrieve all of my belongings when I left our home. He could have used the spare key. I was on campus from 9am - 3:45pm.

No, I never said that he did. I was trying to explain to the other poster why that was not the issue.

I'm very sorry about what you're going through. You may want to contact the police.
