Locked iPod Touch

Hello everyone, is there a way to reach out to the owner of an iPod touch I purchased because the iPod is locked and I would like to remove it. I have contacted Apple support with the serial number and details. If there is any other way or if the owner has lost the device I would like to return it to them. I would appreciate any inputs on how to proceed further.
