Double-click to Open Files on macOS Tahoe 26.6.2 Stopped Working

How can I restore double-click to open files on a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6.2? It has always worked previously but suddenly stopped today. I haven’t changed any system settings, and I’ve restarted the Mac twice.

First, restart your Mac. If that doesn't correct the issue, then adjust your trackpad or mouse double-click speed in settings as follows:

  • Open System Settings from your Apple menu.
  • Click Accessibility in the sidebar, then select Pointer Control under the Motor section.
  • Locate the Double-click speed slider and move it slightly slower toward the left (closer to the turtle icon).

When I click Quick Look - on the top right of the quick look window, there is an option to "Open wih the appropriate App" - that also works inconsistently. Just now I tried to open Word docs and it did not. I had to go into Word, click File Open and then navigate to the folder location to open the file.
This is a huge change for most of us.

Perhaps for you. I see no change.

Have you rebooted your Mac? If not, that's the first step. If that does not help, then see if the problem is present when you boot in safe mode. That process performs some system cleanup and clears caches, and also disables 3rd party extensions that may cause problems.

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

If that does not correct the issue, test in a new user account. A newly-created user account will have all settings at default, and if the issue does not occur in that new account then it provides guidance on what may need to be changed to correct the issue.

Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

Once the testing is complete, the new account can easily be deleted.

Delete a user or group on Mac – Apple Support

Those steps will help to isolate the problem.
