I'm trying to use Apple Maps on safari on a macbook pro M5 but getting an error message that my browser is incompatible with Apple maps, then a redirect to a 'list of compatible browsers'.
Top of that list is Safari, so why is my Safari 26.5.2 getting an incompatible error message??

I don't seem to have any problem opening maps.apple.com in Safari 26.6.2.
Go to System Settings > General > Software Update and see if there's an update waiting for you.
You should find an update for macOS 26.6.2 also. You should apply both.
And, of course, you can take the advice of our friend, @KiltedTim, and simply use the app on your Mac.
