Turning on iphone 17, screen goes blank within 2 seconds before I can enter passcode Can’t be adjusted through AutoLock setting.Is this Apple’s idea of a security feature? Lock out so fast I can’t enter code in time???

No, that isn’t normal behavior or an intended security feature.
I’d first remove the case temporarily, in case it’s pressing the Side button, then force restart the iPhone: quickly press Volume Up, quickly press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
After it restarts, try entering the passcode again. If the screen still goes black after about two seconds, does it come right back on when you press the Side button, or does the iPhone actually restart? That would help narrow down whether this is the display going to sleep or a different problem.

It worked! The force start, pressing volume up then Volume down then side button gave me an extra 3 seconds to enter the log in info! Thanks so much! I do think the plastic from the case was interfering, as screen gave me 5 seconds without the case. I stretched the sides a bit and that helped so plastic case wasn’t pressing on button. (To be clear, the iPhone wasn’t completely resetting, I just had to press side button, but it was so annoying to have to log in so fast. What an easy fix!
