You'll need to authenticate on your iPhone to continue

I have a HomePod Mini and an iPhone 13 Pro. Both are up to date on iOS. When using my HomePod Mini to make requests (such as to add something to my grocery list via Reminders) Siri will ask who is speaking and tell me "You'll need to authenticate on your iPhone to continue." I have searched here and across the internet and not found anything current (2026) that helps. I have turned Personal Content off and back on again. Nothing changes. Please help! This makes HomePod Mini incredibly frustrating to use.

Hi Amy,

That message usually means the HomePod can't confirm your voice through Voice Recognition, so it falls back to asking you to authenticate. Turning Personal Requests off and on doesn't rebuild the voice match, which is why nothing changed.

Try this: on your iPhone go to Settings > Siri, and turn off "Listen for Siri" or "Hey Siri," then turn it back on and redo the voice setup when it prompts. That retrains your voice profile. Then in the Home app, tap your profile, open your settings, and check that Personal Requests is on and set to authenticate without a passcode near your phone.

If it still asks, make sure both devices are on the same Apple ID and Wi-Fi, since a mismatch there is the other common cause.

Im not sure what the issue could be. Make sure you have the latest version of iOS (iOS 26.6.1) and HomePod OS (version 26.6). My devices use those versions.

I just set up personal requests on my HomePod 2nd generation (not a HomePod mini but I don't believe it makes a difference). During the setup, my iPhone prompted me to authorize Siri on iClod, which I did.

In the Home app, after going through the setup to recognize my voice, I had to go back to turn on Personal Content for the HomePod. I also had to go back to "Listen for "Siri" or "Hey Siri"" and toggle between just "Hey Siri" to ""Siri" or "Hey Siri"" and turn on the HomePod on the same screen.

After the setup I was able to add a reminder to the Reminders app with the iPhone locked. I don't know if it makes a difference but the iPhone was a few feet away from the HomePod when I made the request.

I hope those steps can help you. You may want to turn off "Recognize my Voice" and start the setup process all over. Resseting the HomePod to factory settings could also help.
