I have a really really old iMac that I was about to recycle, but noticed some pictures that didn't end up getting onto the 3 Macs I have had since. It is running Mac OS X 10.5.8, has a disc drive and the old USB ports. I tried buying a thumb drive to download the photos onto, but it is not supported.
Is there a brand of thumb drive that will work with this old computer?

Most any thumb drive brand is compatible with the Mac. Any thumb drive with a USB-A plug should work with that old iMac.
You should - may have to - format the drive before you use it with the Mac, however.

The OP should format the thumb drive with the GUID partition scheme and the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Do not format any drive that you want to use with that old computer using APFS. APFS did not exist when Leopard came out, and so Leopard has no idea what to do with it.
