Apple Pencil (2nd generation) pressure sensitivity issue

Hi everyone,

I've had my iPad and 2nd generation Apple Pencil for a few years now, and I'm pretty sure my Apple Pencil has been faulty since I got it. I never really looked into getting it replaced, but I'm wondering if it's still possible.

I'm about 90% sure it's a pressure sensitivity issue. I've tried replacing the tip, and I even put my tip on another Apple Pencil, which worked perfectly. So I'm fairly confident the problem is with the Pencil itself, not the tip or my iPad.

Has anyone had Apple replace or repair a faulty Apple Pencil after this long? Is it something they might cover if it was defective from the start, or would I have needed AppleCare or some other warranty? I'm a student now, so buying a new one isn't really an option at the moment.

Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated, thanks!

The Pencil tip is a user-replaceable passive component that needs to be changed whenever physical wear is apparent. By contrast the gold-coloured metal transducer, situated beneath the plastic pencil tip, is an active component that can be damaged if the Pencil is ever dropped onto a hard surface - or if excessive lateral or direct pressure is applied to the pencil tip.

Apple will often exchange an Apple Pencil, under warranty, that has (or develops) a fault during the applicable one-year limited warranty period. If your iPad has an active AppleCare+ plan, the Apple Pencil is also usually covered by the AppleCare+ plan.

If applicable, under an AppleCare+ plan, the cost of replacement is reduced to a small excess/deductible fee.

You would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to hands-on test your iPad and Apple Pencil. If an issue with either is identified, you'll be in the best possible place to explore your available options:
