How to reset MacBook password using Apple Account or trusted device?

Hi,

You can reset your MacBook login password directly from the login window using your Apple Account and a trusted device for verification.

Reset from the Login Window

1) Type a wrong password on your Mac login screen three times until a reset message appears.

2) Click the question mark button or the reset message next to or above the password field.

3) Click the arrow next to the restart option to reboot your Mac into the recovery assistant.

4) Enter your Apple Account email and password when prompted.

5) Type the verification code sent to your trusted device or phone number.

6) Select the user account you want to change.

7) Enter and verify your new password, then add an optional hint.

8) Click Next, then click Restart to log in with your new password

Or if you don't have trusted devices.

1) Turn off your Mac completely.

2) Turn it on while entering recovery mode:

Apple Silicon: Press and hold the power button until startup options load, select Options, and click Continue.

Intel: Press and hold Command + R while turning on the Mac.

3) Go to the top menu bar, select Utilities, and open Terminal.

4) Type resetpassword and press Return.

5) Choose the option for forgetting passwords or log in with your Apple Account to complete the reset.

The other things you recommended give me a screen that asks if I forgot my password or if it doesn't work. Both of those selections lead me to enter the recovery key. I am never given an opportunity to enter an Apple ID or trusted device or select a different user.
