MacBook's trackpad and keyboard not working, stuck on loading screen

My MacBook's trackpad and keyboard aren't working, but the power button still works. I tried restarting it, but when it turns back on, there is just a spinning loading icon on the screen. I can't move or click the mouse because the trackpad seems to be stuck down and isn't clicking or responding.

Since the built-in keyboard and trackpad both stopped responding and the Mac is also hanging during startup, I’d treat this as more than just a trackpad setting issue.

First disconnect any USB devices, hubs, or other accessories. Then shut the Mac down by holding the power button for up to 10 seconds.

On an Apple silicon MacBook Air, press and hold the power button again and see if you can reach “Loading startup options.” Apple recommends using macOS Recovery from there when a Mac won’t finish starting up.

If the built-in keyboard and trackpad still don’t respond even at startup options, I’d have the Mac checked for a hardware issue rather than trying a reinstall or erase. Don’t erase the Mac unless you have a current backup.
