Seeking advice for 13-inch MacBook Pro home setup with Thunderbolt hub and monitor

Hi. Older 13" MBP M4 Pro user seeking advice re new home productivity setup. Particularly in regard to current Thunderbolt hub-&-monitor packages, as a potential starting point.


Immediate needs: My current routine is browser (DDG or Brave), general productivity (Apple suite), and design elements review (basically looking at JPGs, TIFs, PDFs, whatever). Mainly, I need to settle on basic workflows for (1) multitrack audio production and (2) online trading. Which for me, previously, involved Reaper and ThinkOrSwim.


Secondary needs: I find myself sifting through old files fairly regularly, and that occasionally requires use of antiquated systems. Some form of strategy will be needed re backward compatibility. Also, I will be building a modest AI box ('local only') at some point. Though it's essentially for experimentation, and I'll have help doing it. While I'm feeling some pressure to arrive at solutions for these tasks... no one is hounding me about it at the moment.


Pulling all of it together...


My eyesight isn't what it was a decade ago. My laptop choice (13" MBP) was based on motherboard. I'm recovering from a house fire, so most of my legacy gear is out the window. It's also been 30 years since I built a home system from scratch. Seems sensible to me to start with external monitor + hub.


Added note: 3rd-party learning curve is expected. Somewhat nervous about the cost of buying everything at once. Need to get back to work though. And I can't afford to get bogged down in vendor conflict every time we get an OS update.

Starting with one good external display and a Thunderbolt dock makes sense. I wouldn’t buy the whole setup at once.


One detail worth checking first: the M4 Pro MacBook Pro was sold in 14-inch and 16-inch models, not 13-inch. If yours is the 14-inch M4 Pro, it has three Thunderbolt 5 ports and supports up to two 6K external displays at 60 Hz.


For your use, I’d put the money into the monitor first. With eyesight being a factor, a 27-inch 4K or 5K display would be where I’d start. Then add a Thunderbolt dock only after you know exactly what needs to stay connected.


For audio work, I’d keep the audio interface directly connected to the Mac if possible rather than burying it behind a dock, especially while you’re getting the system established. Drives, Ethernet, keyboard, mouse and similar devices are good candidates for the dock.


Thunderbolt 5 gives you plenty of bandwidth, but you don’t necessarily need an expensive TB5 dock just because the Mac supports it. A reputable Thunderbolt 4 dock may cover your actual needs perfectly well. Apple specifically notes that the M4 Pro’s Thunderbolt 5 ports are intended to support high-bandwidth storage and docking setups.


I’d also keep the legacy-computing problem separate. Solve the current workstation first, then decide which older systems really need physical hardware versus virtualization or file conversion. That should keep you from buying a pile of adapters and peripherals before you know what you actually need.

that dell UltraSharp U4025QW appears to be like a 5K display display with the bottom part missing.

10 bits/color capable, 48 to 120 Hz refresh rate.

interfaces include

HDMI 21.

DisplayPort 1.4, supporting 10 bits/color (for this display size) at just over 60 Hz without Display Stream Compression

2x Thunderbolt-4, also with DisplayPort 1.4.


that latter is somewhat disappointing because ThunderBolt-4 COULD have supported DisplayPort 2.1, with refresh rates just short of 105 Hz without Display Stream Compression.


Higher data rates can be obtained using Display Stream Compression, but after a while that tends to be not completely lossless.

Regarding cable lengths,


your summary above is about the best we have going.


They are all based on the concept that, at the voltage levels and dual-rail logic used, the signaling rate used for USB-3 and Thunderbolt-3 and -4 are based on 20 G bits/sec for USB-3, and 40 G Bits/sec for Thunderbolt-3 and -4. Those signals start to degrade at lengths above 0.5 meters for brand-X Thunderbolt cables, and 1 meter for brand-X USB-3 cables.


As I said, Thunderbolt-5 has the same signaling interval as Thunderbolt-3 and-4, but uses a modulated signal when ALL devices and cable affirm that they are Thunderbolt-5 capable.


The Mac can not recover from a transmit data error at Display-data speeds -- there is no time to re-transmit the damaged data. The Mac has very high standards and does not allow the standard default practice of simply blanking the damaged data for one screen refresh. So when a Display-data error occurs on a Modern Mac, the display drops out.


It is starting to get slightly more complex when peripheral devices actually support ThunderBolt-3 and -4 , Thunderbolt-5, and USB-4 directly.

My MBP is indeed a 14-inch M4 Pro model.

My MBP has three USB-C connectors, but seems to have been made prior to broader switch to TB5. According to System Info... "14-inch, Nov 2024"... "USB 3.1 Bus"... with three "Thunderbolt/USB4 Device Tree" assignments.


Regardless... the following Apple Support page indicates that you are correct re upper-end of external monitor provisioning. It specifies MacBook Pro M4 / M4 Pro as supporting two 6k displays, 60Hz refresh, full resolution.

Heard re conservative path. Pick up a recent external monitor and dock; connect to laptop if higher-bandwidth; connect to dock if lower-bandwidth. Address needs as they arise, and avoid unnecessary complexity. Very much my speed.


One outstanding concern, though, that feels important at the moment:


Based on product reviews from past year or so... it seems that monitor manufacturers' support for machine sharing (via TB) varies quite a bit. Both by model and iteration. Dramatically in some cases. So if relevant threads on this subject come to mind... links would be much appreciated.

HDMI uses higher voltages and supports longer cable lengths, thought to be as high as 15 feet, at least for up to HDMI 2.0 supporting displays up to 4K at 60 Hz at 8 bits/color. Higher uses HDMI 2.1, whose cables are long, but I don't know what the limits are.


There is a very expensive caveat in Sharing one display among multiple computers using anything Other than HDMI. Cable lengths for up to USB-C cable speeds (again around the 4K at 60 Hz mark) are limited to ONE meter, maximum without re-driving the signal.


Thunderbolt and equivalent high-speed DisplayPort run faster, and are limited to 0.5 meters without super-engineered cables that can go as high as 0.7 meters.


Anything longer needs a cable with signal re-drivers in it. That used to cost upwards of US$125 for a one or two meter cable, bur prices are starting to ease slightly.


Punchline: Be sure you are accounting for the length and cost of the cables you will need, This may not be a so simple.

Thank you, GBA, for that framing. Apple's choices re when and where to implement DP 1.4 vs DP 2.1 were invisible to me. I'd not encountered many practical discussion of DP iterations until recently. Still don't know much about DSC. And I had no idea that some Mac users were lobbying for quicker pace in adoption.


FWIW: I did see marketing language, earlier in monitor research process, that described practical differences between DP 1.2 and 1.4 as 'meaningful'. The same sources referred to DP 2.1 to as 'in a class of its own', 'future-proof', or at least 'more mature than Thunderbolt'. Guessing that Apple's commitment to Thunderbolt brand might account for downplay of DP standards there. :)


Servant of Cats pointed out some of the obscurities of TB implementation, when sharing MBP product line specs earlier in thread. This scenario seems like it could be more cut & dry though.

In the System Information application, the 4 in the heading Thunderbolt/USB4 refers to the USB version – not to the Thunderbolt version.


USB4 (no space) is the "official" name of the fourth major version of the USB specification, although some Apple Web sites refer to USB4 as "USB 4". All host ports called USB4 ports must use USB-C connectors. Thunderbolt 3, 4, and 5 are all protocols that can live on USB-C connectors.


USB4 "borrowed" some technology from Thunderbolt 3, with Intel's permission. There is enough similarity between some USB4 stuff and some Thunderbolt stuff that Apple's engineers simply grouped it all together for display purposes. What they forgot to do (or were too lazy to do) was to include a line telling you which version of Thunderbolt each of the ports in the "Thunderbolt/USB4" section supports.

  • Charging
  • DisplayPort
  • Thunderbolt 5 (up to 120Gb/s)

That "up to 120Gb/s" speed for USB4 suggests that your MacBook Pro implements USB4 version 2.0 (or whatever they call it - I haven't kept track), as the fastest data transfer speed for the original USB4 was "up to 40 Gbps".


Bottom line: Your Mac does indeed have Thunderbolt 5 ports, even if System Information won't tell you which version of Thunderbolt you have.

Many high-end displays have one or more HDMI 2.1 inputs, and your Mac likely has a HDMI 2.1 Direct output port, which can not be really be used for anything else.


Be sure to use high quality cables. For 4K at 10 bits color and higher, ULTRA spec HDMI cables are required.


Connecting an HDMI display uses up one display-generator, so it counts as one of your supported displays, but does not consume a Thunderbolt port.

Hey. Thanks for your response. Just getting back to thread.


Current external monitor scene is more varied than I'm accustomed to. So I've been on forums, shopping sites, etc sifting through comments from Mac users. Some of them utilizing third-party displays (via Thunderbolt, or DP / HDMI) with both their Mac and Windows machines. In the process, I've gotten sucked in by some of the descriptions. Particularly of '5K2K' setups that incorporate scaling + KVM.


Plenty of fans (& non-fans) of LG, Samsung, and Alienware in that mix. But Dell seems to have a fairly mature solution for Mac productivity types, from what I gather, in their UltraSharp line. With a relative sweet spot at 39" screen, 5120 x 2160 native resolution, 120Hz refresh, and "Looks Like 3008 x 1269" scaling coordination... maybe?


Obviously, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Forums aren't always the best place to go for technical insights. But sentiments shared in those settings do tend to get at the Good, Bad, and Ugly of things. :)


Hopefully the broader strokes of what I'm saying make sense. I've certainly been tempted to drive up to the Apple Store, put a Studio Display on the credit card, and call it a day. But a larger monitor, with Thunderbolt support, from Dell... at half the price? It's hard to look away from that.

My intent with "machine sharing" comment was a blanket reference to KVM-equipped monitor designs. End goal being to connect, switch between, and manipulate content from two local devices. Same stuff we've been doing for decades. Just with Thunderbolt (or DisplayPort Alt-Mode, or HDMI) as top-level interaction surface.

Thank you again, PreCognition. Your general recommendations here have been helpful. (Same goes for GBA's tips.)


Hopefully I've put enough effort into scrutinizing my personal needs and timeline expectations. Alongside monitor hardware, firmware, and software interactions.


For folks in a similar boat that've happened on this thread:


My initial focus was sorting through outside forums for relevant use cases involving M4 Pro MBPs. Then I did my best to confirm Mac OS support via Community Discussions. And from there, I moved into Apple Support pages. The latter would've been bewildering for me without the former.


I've kept my personal concerns re backwards compatibility in mind, but not prioritized them. Guidance received in this thread helped me to avoid 'analysis paralysis' there.


I just pulled the trigger on one of Dell's current KVM-equipped Thunderbolt monitors (UltraSharp U4025QW). I'll post a summary of my experience here. Might take me a while, as my hands-on familiarity with current era of displays is limited.


Good luck to fellow shoppers. And thanks again to forum elders.
