How can I see if the Apple Store has my replacement part in stock before I come all the way to the appointment?

How can I make sure the Apple Store has the replacement part in stock before I go into the store? The screen to my MacBook is cracked, I went to the geek squad in a Best Buy and they said they don’t do MacBook screen replacements in store and it would be 4 weeks for them to ship it to the Apple Store and back. I use it almost every day and it’s time to start registering for school so this is not an option for me.

I decided to just take it to an Apple Store instead, but the closest one to me is temporarily closed, and the next closest is about 30 min away. I just want to make sure they have the right screen in stock so I don’t have to go all that way just for them to still have to ship it out anyways.

I tried calling the store but it only gave me apple support, and she said they could not tell her over the phone if they have the part in stock. Am I just expected to drive all the way there hoping they’ll have the part to do it same day? Is there really no way for me to check if it’s in stock?

Apple does not provide any such details even to their own Apple Authorized Service Providers.

I can tell you that for the past six months or so, some Apple parts are taking up to three weeks to arrive. So I'm guessing the Best Buy estimate may be based on their own personal experience with such mail-in repairs.

If you cannot be without a computer, then you should always have a spare device that can be used in case of emergencies.

FYI, make sure you have a good backup of your computer because there is always a chance Apple could end up erasing the device during the repair which will destroy all data on the internal SSD. Hopefully you already have frequent & regular backups anyway because there are a lot more new ways to permanently lose access to the data stored on the internal SSD of the recent Macs due to all of the hardware, software, and security changes.

I think you have three options:

(1) Go to the Apple Store in person. I suspect they are not able to get into specifics on the phone without first examining the computer and diagnosing it themselves. The screen is cracked and needs to be replaced, but there may be other parts or repairs that are needed. So having this or that part in stock might not be the entire story. Also -- some Apple Stores can do certain repairs on the premises and others may have to send out some repairs, or in some instances, all repairs. Even if they can do some repairs on the premises, they may be booked up and in that case you would need to wait for some amount of time (possibly days or weeks) for the repair.

(2) Look up other Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) here

https://getsupport.apple.com/repair-locations?locale=en_US

If you call one of the AASP, since they are independent shops, they may be more flexible on the phone about discussing parts availability and time to complete the repair. But when the laptop gets there, as indicated above, it might be more than a screen replacement.

(3) Use Best Buy and have them send it out. See if you can find a place that will lease you a Mac for a relatively short time (Apple's new lease program has the lease lasting 24 months, you need just ~ 1 month) while yours is being repaired. Another option is to buy outright a used Mac, say from OWC or Apple, to use while yours is being repaired. Or, if it works for you, a used Windows laptop might be a bit cheaper for temporary use.

Do a Google search of "Apple Computer rentals"? There are several companies available that will do that and there could be one nearby or can ship overnight. This is an option if your Mac will take some time to repair. The display is a very expensive item and if there is additional damage caused by the display being damaged the cost could add up quickly especially once labor is added to it. Depending on your location, labor rates could be quite high.

Something you did not mention is what year/model MacBook that you have and whether you have AppleCare+ coverage. If it is out of warranty and depending on the age, you may be better off just buying another Mac as the cost of repair could run up close to the price of a new one. If you did buy AppleCare+, then time of repair would be the only issue. Also, if you have AppleCare+, you could possibly get expedited repairs. If you don't then you just get added to the end of a repair queue.
