Mac mini Library folder shows incorrect size and unexpected storage usage

I noticed that the Library folder (for an individual user, not the whole system) takes up ~140GB. However, when I go through the folder itself I can only account for ~55GB of space. This makes it difficult to clear out room (I'm on a 256GB drive).

I'll add that just a few days ago I had ~30GB in free space and now I have less than 10. I haven't added anything major to my computer and so the loss of ~20GB is odd.

One more piece of info: all of a sudden I have a Time Machine backup that is massive (~60GB at the 50% transfer mark). No idea where this is coming from but I wonder if it's tied in to all of this.

Can anyone help me understand why there's this discrepancy and how I can figure out if there are files I can purge?

iPhone/iPad backups are stored in the "~/Library" folder if you are backing up these devices to your Mac.

I also believe iCloud data gets stored here as well, but I don't use iCloud so I cannot say for certain.

Some apps may also store some of their data here as well.

To help you understand your storage and attempt to get it under control, you should consider the paid third party app Storeograph. I've never bought this app....I've only viewed the demonstration video which looks like it is a useful app which actually understands how macOS storage works to help educate the user. I'm not aware of any other such app which actually understands how macOS storage works these days. You have to keep in mind that some areas may remain inaccessible due to all of the privacy & security of macOS.

I totally agree! My music folder is on an external drive along with any movies/videos.

Regardless, though, the issue remains: why is my Finder telling me my ~/Library folder is so large? At the end of the day, regardless of my own approach to saving space, considering that there's a mismatch between what I can see in my ~/Library folder and what Finder says is in that folder, there seems to be still an issue with my system.

I'll check that out! FWIW, don't sync any devices with this computer, so backups are unlikely to be the cause.

Storage management by means of selective deletion of Library folder contents is pretty useless.

What you should focus on is the largest of your own files, typically Music and its library, movies and videos, and your Photo library. All of this can easily live on an external drive and remain completely usable without much fuss. Add to that your Documents folder contents, if it is particularly loaded.

The biggest problem you have is your low capacity startup drive. You will be playing whack-a-mole until you can provide a higher capacity startup drive, and about the only way to do that with an Apple Silicon Mac – M-series – is to install macOS on an external drive and use that to boot and run the Mac.
