iPad Air volume control stuck with Apple USB-C to headphone jack adapter

iPad Air 13" (M4) iOS 26.6.1

Bought an Apple adapter USB-C to headphone jack, specifically for the above iPad Air. The adapter didn't work properly; the volume was either all the way UP or all the way DOWN.

Didn't discover this until the 14 day return window had closed, so I bought a second adapter , again from Apple. The second adapter behaves exactly like the first one.

Is anyone else having this issue? How can it be fixed?

Since two separate Apple adapters behave the same way, I’d suspect the iPad or the headphones before assuming both adapters are defective. Apple specifically supports the USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter for audio on USB-C iPads. Charge and connect with the USB-C port on your iPad - Apple Support

With the headphones connected, open Control Center and try the volume slider there. Also try a different pair of wired headphones if you have one. That would help narrow down whether this is specific to the headphones or iPadOS.

If the Control Center slider also jumps between minimum and maximum with different headphones, I’d report it to Apple as an iPadOS issue rather than buy another adapter.
