If you mean a recovery key for your Mac login password, that’s usually the FileVault recovery key. It’s created when FileVault is set up and should be stored somewhere safe away from the Mac.
If you mean an Apple Account recovery key, that’s different. You can set one up in System Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security > Recovery Key. Apple explains it here: Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account - Apple Support
