Unable to access or factory reset Mac mini M4 due to forgotten password and missing recovery key
I have a Mac mini M4 (2025) with a local user account. I no longer remember the password for that account, so I cannot log in.
I am trying to factory reset the Mac, but when I enter Recovery, I am asked for a FileVault recovery key to unlock the drive. I do not have this recovery key either.
I do not need to recover the existing data. I am fine with completely erasing the Mac and setting it up from scratch.
How can I:
- Completely erase the internal drive without the local account password or FileVault recovery key?
- Reinstall macOS and create a new user account?
- If this cannot be done through macOS Recovery, what is the correct procedure for resetting an M4 Mac mini?
