MacBook Air M3 battery maximum capacity dropped to 87% at 235 cycles

Title: MacBook Air M3 battery capacity dropped from 90% to 87% in about 2 months at only 235 cycles

Hi everyone,

I bought a 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip in November 2024. I am concerned about the battery health because the Maximum Capacity has recently been dropping faster than I expected.

My current battery information is:

MacBook Air 15-inch M3

Purchased: November 2024

Current Cycle Count: 235

Condition: Normal

Maximum Capacity: 87%

About two months ago, the Maximum Capacity was showing 90%.

Around 10 days ago, it was showing 88% with a cycle count of approximately 230.

Today it is showing 87% with 235 cycles.

So the reported Maximum Capacity has gone from 90% to 87% in approximately two months, even though the battery has only accumulated around 5 additional cycles recently.

I am particularly concerned because I would like to keep this MacBook until at least November 2028 without replacing the battery. My goal is to have the battery remain at around 81% or higher after the next two years.

I recently started changing my charging habits because I read that using a MacBook while connected to power can be better for battery longevity. For approximately 5 days, I have been using my MacBook plugged in whenever I am near a charger, especially when watching videos, browsing, or doing other tasks.

I have also enabled the Charge Limit feature and set it to 85%. Therefore, when I am using the MacBook while plugged in, it normally stays around 85% rather than charging to 100%.

I noticed something else in System Information that I would like to understand.

The current Battery Information shows:

State of Charge: 85%

Cycle Count: 235

Condition: Normal

Maximum Capacity: 87%

It also shows:

Current Power Source: Yes

AC Charger Connected: Yes

Charging: No

At the same time, my MacBook is physically connected to the charger and the MagSafe indicator is green.

I understand that "Charging: No" may simply mean that the 85% Charge Limit has been reached and the Mac is currently running from the power adapter rather than actively charging the battery. I would like confirmation that this behavior is normal.

I am using the Apple 35W USB-C Power Adapter, and System Information correctly detects the Apple adapter.

My main questions are:

  1. Is 87% Maximum Capacity at 235 cycles considered normal for a MacBook Air M3?
  2. Is a drop from 90% to 87% in approximately two months something I should be concerned about?
  3. Is it possible that the Maximum Capacity percentage is being recalculated and therefore dropping by 1% at a time rather than representing actual rapid battery degradation?
  4. Is using the MacBook while plugged in with an 85% Charge Limit a good practice for long-term battery health?
  5. Does the "Charging: No" status while the MacBook is connected to the charger and sitting at 85% mean that the Mac is correctly using power from the adapter instead of continuously charging the battery?
  6. Is there anything else I should change in my charging or usage habits if I want to keep this MacBook until November 2028 without replacing the battery?
  7. Should I run Apple Diagnostics or have Apple inspect the battery now, or is it reasonable to continue using it normally and monitor the battery health over the next few months?

I am mainly concerned because the MacBook is not even two years old yet, the cycle count is only 235, but the reported Maximum Capacity is already 87%.

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has a MacBook Air with Apple silicon and has experienced similar battery health readings.

This is very likely normal.


To compare, a 2019 Macbook Pro we use a lot here has 112 cycles after 7 years as it is mostly connected to a charger. The Apple Battery Health Management usually constrains the charge to stay at 80%. When the laptop will be running on battery for a while we adjust it to charge to 100%, temporarily.


Note below, maximum capacity dropped by 2% over 15 days.

Followed by another change over two months IMPROVING its capacity by 4%

You can expect similar patterns. But from the above I would say at best the ability to actually measure battery capacity like this is only good to +/- 4%. So your drop of 3% might not even exceed the normal error in such a measurement.

Note that if you take this laptop in to Apple they will send you away because they consider anything at 80% or higher for amount of original capacity remaining to be "normal." They know that these numbers can go up and down by 3 or 4% for no apparent reasons. And can stay at the same value for a year or more (mine has been at the 86% level for more than 1-1/2 years now.)


My recommendation: you are treating your Mac well and your battery will likely get a long life. My opinion is that a cap of 80% or 75% might be a little better for the battery than 85%, that's based on some papers I have read about lithium batteries, but you can find many opinions about that. Will it last through Nov 2028? I believe that it will. My 2019 MacBook Pro is 7 years old and still at 86%. Your computer will be 7 years old in 2031. I think yours could last through 2031 or much longer. What is the worst that can happen? You might have to pay for a new battery (which is about $200), but even if it drops below 80%, it can still be used unless it says "Service Recommended" or unless it fails a diagnostic test. If it fails a test with a finding that the battery is faulty, I would say it is mandatory to replace it because lithium batteries when in a degraded state can be dangerous -- they can swell up and damage the rest of the computer or even (very unusual, but it has happened) burst into flame. And if you have AppleCare+, the cost of a battery replacement is $0.

Back to lower charge levels when connected to charger.


Using Apple's Battery Health Management makes sense, and also connecting to the charger whenever one can.

FYI, The critical part here is "stored" for the 40%-60% SOC. As in the battery/device is not being actively used.


When a battery/device is being actively used, then it is best to prevent the battery from being at 100% for long periods of time....hence Apple's option to exercise the battery with Optimized Charging. But general battery drain & charge will also maintain battery health as well on an actively used device.
