Which apps are being used when the iPhone is getting too hot?

• Restore from a backup
• Complete a software update, particularly to a major release
• Wirelessly charge your device
• Use graphics-intensive or processor-intensive apps, games, or features, including camera apps
• Stream high-quality video

These conditions are normal. Your device will cool when the process is complete or when you finish your activity. If your device doesn't display a temperature warning, you can keep using your device.

If your device gets too warm

iOS and iPadOS devices have built-in protections to prevent overheating. If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, your device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. 

Avoid these conditions and activities because they might change the performance of your device:

• Leaving your device in a car on a hot day
• Leaving your device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time
• Using certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game, or using the camera for an extended period of time

If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, you might notice these changes:

• Charging, including wireless charging, slows or stops
• The display dims or goes black
• Cellular signal might weaken as radios enter a low-power state
• The camera flash or other camera features might be temporarily disabled
• In some apps or features, performance is reduced with lower frame rates or increased processing times

Additionally, if you're navigating, your device might show this alert and turn off the display: "Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down." Navigation still provides audible turn-by-turn directions. When approaching a turn, the display will illuminate to guide you through the turn.

If you do not get a temperature warning and the iPhone temperature is constantly too hot, you should get your iPhone diagnosed by visiting an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider next to your place:

It is not unusual for an iPhone to become warm when being used - more so when using some types of iPhone case. High screen brightness and/or CPU intensive Apps will also create more heat.

The key point is that whilst your iPhone may become very warm in normal use, the iPhone should not become uncomfortably hot to handle. If your iPhone is becoming too hot to hold, you should take your iPhone along to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians can provide a full hands-on assessment and test for faults.

My experience says this is purely caused by some third-party app that you may have installed.

Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.

Restore from where? After 3 days the icloud backup will have been overwritten.

Need to back up to computer with Finder or Apple Devices, or turn off daily icloud backup.
