Remotely move pointer on iPad screen for assistance

Remote control of an iPad – can I move the pointer on the other person's screen?

I would like to remotely assist someone using an iPad.

What I would ideally like to do is remotely control the iPad and move a mouse/pointer around on their screen, so they can see exactly where I am pointing and what they need to tap.

I am not necessarily looking to take complete control of the iPad. The main thing I want is the ability to move the pointer on their screen and show them where to click/tap while talking to them.

Is this possible using Apple's built-in features, or is there an Apple-supported app or method that allows this?

I have tried the usual screen-sharing options, but I specifically want the other person to be able to see my pointer moving around on their iPad screen. (based in Europe)

Apple hasn't provided a method to take full control of an iPad - as device security is largely designed to inhibit this capability. However, assuming that the iPad is functional and the remote User is capable, you can use the Apple FaceTime App to provide remote assistance to another Apple device-user. This feature is a built-in feature of recent versions of iPadOS/iOS/macOS:

Using FaceTime, not only can you see the other participants screen, but with their permission you can remotely move a cursor around their screen and guide the remote party.

Other third-party remote control options exist - and principally require installing a third-party App (e.g. Team Viewer). Scammers often manipulate end-users into installing Apps of this type to gain persistent access to a victim's device - so as to facilitate fraud. As such, installing third-party remote access Apps is best avoided.

Thank you for the detailed response. I tried FaceTime remote control at home, which is the reason I asked.

I’m hoping to use it to help elderly people with simple, frequently repeated tasks—for example, finding the Messages/iMessage button in the Dock. You can show someone several times where it is, but they may still forget, so remote assistance seemed like it could be very useful.

Unfortunately, the FaceTime process for allowing remote control appears to require two separate actions on the other person’s device. I can see that becoming difficult for some of the people I help, particularly those in their 80s and 90s. It took me a few moments to work out the procedure myself, and the other person I tested it with was much younger. In the end, I had to walk next door and show them in person!

I used to use Timbuktu years ago, so I was hoping there might be something similarly straightforward for the iPad. I understand the security reasons for limiting full remote access, and I certainly don’t want to put anyone at risk by asking them to install an unsafe third-party app. I may have to persevere with FaceTime and find a way to explain the steps as simply as possible.

Indeed, the remote user does need to complete some minor actions.

Thankfully, if the person being helped has been taught how to answer a FaceTime call, you can then talk-through the next few steps give remote control to you - the helper.

In summary, concentrate on teaching just the steps necessary to answer the FaceTime call. After the call has been established, you can simply talk-through the next steps to allow remote control.
