Final Cut Pro: Custom colors for Video Roles and audio display conflict

FCP 12.3 – Edit Roles – Can I use my own colours for Video Roles?

I am using Final Cut Pro 12.3 and would like to organise my video clips using Video Roles and colours.

I do not like the standard colours provided by Final Cut Pro. Is there any way to create or select my own custom coloursfor Video Roles, rather than being restricted to Apple's preset colour choices?

There is another issue I find frustrating.

If I have a normal video clip that contains both video and audio, it appears that the audio role determines the colour displayed for the clip. To see the Video Role colour, I have to expand the video/audio components separately.

Does this mean that, in practice, if I want my video clips to display different custom Video Role colours in the normal timeline, I have to detach the audio from every video clip?

If so, is there another way of displaying custom Video Role colours without detaching the audio?

I would appreciate clarification from anyone who has found a better workflow.

Yes, Apple forces that horrible color pallet on us, and you can't change it. Frustrates lots of users I personally know.

No, you can't decide which color, audio role or video role, the clip shows up as, it is ALWAYS audio role color. Why? Only Apple can tell you why. I don't understand why we can't either see both (top half the video role color, bottom half the audio role color). So if you're showing audio waveforms in your timeline, you can double-click the audio portion (bottom half of a clip) to expand the audio out, without detaching from the video portion. Then you can see both colors at once. But why can't we see both colors at once with the clip collapsed, also? I don't understand...

Do NOT detach the audio. Instead, you can Expand Audio, which keeps the integrity of the clip containing both audio and video, and will show each in the color determined by the relevant Role. You expand and un-expand as needed. (Whereas detaching would make two completely separate clips, one for video and one for audio)

One other option you might consider: open the timeline index (command-shift-2), click on Roles, and then click Show Audio Lanes. This shows the audio and video organized separately and the audio part is grouped according to roles (e.g. one “lane” for Dialogue, another for Music, etc)

Thanks, Ben. I’ve worked out what I was doing now.

By using Assign Audio Roles, I can change the colour of the whole clip while keeping the audio attached. This is exactly what I wanted to achieve in the first place—there is no need to detach the audio in order to colour-label the video.

Hi, thanks for the explanation. I may have discovered something, but I’m not sure why it worked.

I selected one particular clip and used Expand Audio. I then moved to another clip and used the option to colour-code the audio and video clip together. On that second clip, the audio was not expanded or displayed separately—it appeared simply as one combined video/audio clip—and I was able to colour-code it as I wanted.

Previously, I could not get this to work. I’m therefore wondering whether using Expand Audio on the first clip changed a timeline display or Role setting that also affected the other clips. I did not use Detach Audio, and I have not intentionally changed or combined the audio and video.

Could someone explain what may have happened? Did expanding the audio on the first clip somehow make the audio/video colour-coding option available for the other clips, or was this simply a change in the way Final Cut was displaying the clips?

I tested, and when I Expand the audio from the video portion, I see each in its own color.

When I close them, the whole clip reverts to the audio role color.

Can you provide a screen shot of it working the way you want it to?
