Unable to install Garmin Express update on M5 MacBookPro with Rosetta 2 installed

I have a working copy of Garmin Express (version 7.29.1.0.) There is an update available, but when I try to install I get an "Unable to Install" message + "Garmin Express requires a system with a 64-bit Intel processor."

I downloaded Rosetta 2 via Terminal, but the same thing happened.

Suggestions appreciated...what am I missing?

Garmin's Support page is not very helpful.

Garmin – Garmin Express Compatibility Requirements

"Future Support On Silicon-Based Macs

Garmin Express software for Mac is intended for Intel-based Mac computers. For Mac computers that use Apple silicon, installing Rosetta may enable the computer to use Garmin Express. Apple plans to end support for Rosetta in a future version of MacOS."

Note the word "may" and the lack of any (public) plans for an Apple Silicon update.

Sounds like you are not the only one with this problem:

Garmin Forums – Garmin Express MAC STILL refuses to install on OSX, asking for a 64bit Intel processor

Some users report being able to extract an installer from the package that Garmin provides, and then successfully use that. I do not have the Garmin software and am not going to vouch for this approach one way or the other.

Even if it does work, you're still going to have the problem that unless Garmin updates their software, it will not run on macOS 28 (next year's successor to this fall's Golden Gate) and later.

I looked at that link ... the people reporting issues were on the beta version of macOS 27. It sounds like Garmin Express (which I use on 26.6.2 and my Garmin Express version is the latest updated version) is compatible with OS 26 but maybe not the beta version of OS 27.

I am expect that Garmin will provide a compatible version of Garmin Express by the time macOS 27 becomes official.

Garmin Express has been running on Silicon Macs for some time now. The Garmin forums make that clear, there were posters there noting that it runs on OS 26 on M2 and later Macs.
