i have a macbook air that runs macOS Monterey. i want to run microsoft offoce on it but i do i get round this as the latest wont work.

even older ones may not be able to activate, as that would require microsofts consent, and really old versions would likely be 32bit which mean it would not run on monterey
if it was me then I would try taking a look at
Free and private office suite, no forced AI — LibreOffice
or
ONLYOFFICE desktop and mobile apps | ONLYOFFICE
both will read and write to ms office formats
