Thank you for the reply. It turned out to be (Again!!) Operator Error combined with my bias from early training in file editing cutting archaic strips of plastic. Apparently iMovie will only record a voice track over an existing image track and does not have the capability of recording an audio track if there is no existing track in the project.

Apple Support provides an article (link below) that may or may not help:

See: Record a voiceover in iMovie on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

  1. "In the iMovie app on your Mac, position the playhead in the timeline where you want to start recording, and then click the Record Voiceover button (microphone icon) below the viewer.

The voiceover recording controls appear below the viewer.

2."To adjust the recording settings, do any of the following:

    • Change the input device: Click the Voiceover Options button (icon showing two sliders, one above the other) and then click the Input Source pop-up menu and choose an option.
  • Adjust the input level of the microphone: Click the Voiceover Options button, and then drag the Volume slider right to increase the volume of what is being recorded, or left to decrease it.
    • You can monitor the audio levels using the audio meter to the left of the red Record button. You should set the volume so that the audio meter stays green, even when your voice is at its loudest.
    • Mute sound from other clips while recording: Click the Voiceover Options button and select the Mute Project checkbox."

Thank you for taking the time to reply, and to share your experience with us.

Seems GarageBand, (or even Voice Memos) may be a better choice for some audio recording purposes. Am always grateful for the software Apple provides for free when we purchase an Apple product.

For some particular tasks though, paying for professional software (eg: Apple's Final Cut Pro, or Logic Pro, Adobe's Premiere, etc.) may be the only way to achieve real success.
