How are you importing these files? For my Z8 I use the SD card and drag the jpgs to an open Album in Photos. Of course, File>Import works well, also. (My RAW files I edit, as needed, in Lightroom.) Are you using File>Import in the Photos app, or what?
When you say "open up," what do you mean? I'm guessing that this is in the Photos app-- is that right? In PhotosI I see small thumbnails, of course. Selecting and hitting the space bar gives me a full screen image that I can zoom in on. Hitting Return gets me to Edit Mode. What exactly is happening for you?
I can't tell if you are an "old hand" at using the Photos app, or if it's new to you. Are you using Photos in its default state, with "copy" checked in Setting>General?
Low available storage can cause problems in displaying images. What is your storage on this Mac? At System Settings>General> Storage, my Mac says 745 GB of 1TBB used. What does yours say? Less than 15% free can cause problems.
Photos keeps several different sized copies of pictures in its Library. You may want to see this:

You haven't said if you use iCloud Photos, and if you use Optimize Storage. These things may change what's stored in the Photos Library
