Thank you! Your replies help me to be more specific with my question. I have an M1 Max 64 GB memory studio machine and a 2022 27 " studio display (not XDR). Can my machine easily handle a 2nd new 27" studio display through one of the additional Thunderbolt ports in the rear of the machine?

Apple discontinued the original Studio Display (2022). The current models are the Studio Display (2026) and the Studio Display XDR. Both require the connected Mac to be running macOS 26.3.1 (Tahoe) or later.
The Studio Display (2026) is a 27" 5K display with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. It's been upgraded with Thunderbolt 5 and a Thunderbolt daisy-chaining port (which replaces one of the "plain" USB-C ports on the older model). Apple lists it as compatible with the Mac Studio (2022) and later – and I think it would probably count as a single display towards your limit of four (of this type).
The more expensive Studio Display XDR has a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. Apple lists it as being compatible with your Mac, but only at a refresh rate of 60 Hz or less. On some other threads on this board, there has been discussion regarding whether this display might consume two display generators under some circumstances – but I do not recall enough of the details to know whether that would be relevant to your M1 Max Mac Studio.
It sounds to me like, if you are running macOS 26.3.1 or later, your M1 Max Mac Studio could easily handle a Studio Display (2026) in addition to your existing Studio Display (2022). (That is, if they are plugged into your Mac using different rear-panel Thunderbolt ports. Since your Mac has Thunderbolt 4, I don't think that you're going to have enough bandwidth on one port to daisy-chain the Studio Display (2022) to the back of one of the new monitors.)
You can generally bank on your Mac actually supporting the specified number of displays, provided you are really following all the subtleties in the specifications, and using high-enough spec cables that are appropriately short.
The data rates needed to re-paint almost any display data are FAR faster than can be accomplished by ordinary one-character-at-a-time I/O using the processor. They can ONLY be accomplished with a hardware assist, which I refer to as a Hardware display-generator.
The fixed number of these devices included in your processor is generally the only limiting factor. Once the screen image has been rendered into the display buffer, the graphics processor(s) are not involved in any way, until you change something.
The display-generator device automatically fetches successive characters from the display buffer in memory, serializes, and sends them out to the display. Only when the entire screen data have been sent does it make any demands on the processor. it interrupts once, asking to be set up again for the next entire screenful.
Supporting additional displays when you have an available display-generator adds only a trivial amount of processing. What it needs is memory bandwidth. ALL the Apple silicon M-series processor are memory-bandwidth BEASTS.
Executive Summary: Add as many displays as the specs allow, and there will be NO measurable impact on the overall speed or performance of the computer.
Note that you can only plug displays into the front-panel USB-C ports on Mac Studios with Ultra chips. On Mac Studios with Max chips, the front-panel USB-C ports are for USB only.
