Does profile photo sharing stop after someone changes their number?

If someone changes their number, will their shared contact photo disappear for me? I messaged a contact I haven’t reached out to in a while and they said “I’m sorry, who is this?” as if they don’t have my number, but their automatic iMessage profile picture and status updates are still shared with me. Is it possible they changed their number or did they more likely just delete my contact?
