Independent scrolling directions for mouse and trackpad on macOS Tahoe

How do I set independent scrolling directions for mouse and trackpad?

I have an HP Ultra-Fast Scroll Wireless Mouse 780M/785M and I'm on MacOs Tahoe 26.3.2 MacBook Neo.


I use the mouse for uni/when I'm docked in on my desk and use trackpad when away from my desk, sometimes I leave the mouse connected when using the trackpad and it's getting rather annoying to keep changing this 'natural scrolling' setting, which seems to be linked between mouse and trackpad. I can't find anything in advanced settings to unlink them either. I'm returning to MacOs after years on Windows, and back in the day I would've fixed this with some third party app but I can't be arsed to go look for one and configure it when I'm sure there's just some simple toggle somewhere that I'm just not seeing rn.

At present, there are no native device-independent settings for mouse and trackpad - such as scrolling behaviour. The existing system setting is universal. Yours is not the first post seen within the Apple Support Communities to request the ability to independently set different scrolling behaviour for these two different HID devices...


The Apple Support Community is a user-to-user technical forum. Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. Other than the site Moderators, Apple neither monitor nor participate here. However, Apple does invite submission of comments and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. If you would like to see a specific feature or functionality in a future versions macOS/iPadOS, this would be the most appropriate channel through which to make a request:

While you may not receive an individual reply, it is understood that all feedback is logged/analysed and fed-back to the relevant teams within Apple for consideration. If a sufficient number of similar requests are received, it is perhaps more likely that a change will gain traction with Apple's Developers.
