Music application on MAC Tahoe disaster

While running synch via Finder to update iPhone music playlists, function rewrote my entire Music library on my Mac. Music library has 49,500 songs. Result Music app on Mac now reports that it cannot find files, even though they are there (file info is correctly shown on song location (file tab). No logic, random missing files throughout the Music app. Application cannot find random songs within the same album folder.

Window states: " The song "example" could not be used because the original file could not be found..."

How to fix this without rebuilding my entire library manually for each file entry?

Running Tahoe 26.6.2

IOS 26.6.1

Music 1.6.6.4

Two things you could try.

If you run backups then restore a backed up version of the database from before it messed up. The database file is <username>/Music/Music/musiclibrary.musiclibrary

If you don't run backups then the Dougs Scripts website (google it) might have an app/script to re-link the music files. I've a vague recollection that it used to. If not then a mail to Doug via his site might get you one.

You haven't got an uninstalled iPhone connection update lurking somewhere have you? Every so often, after an OS update on either phone or Mac, the Mac needs an update to connect to the iPhone. I'm sure you've seen them. Problem is they sometimes get missed or crowded out for some reason and I don't notice them straight away. Hit F3 and make sure there's not a small rectangular window lurking there.

Apart from that, my advice stands. Connect your phone to Finder, remove all the music and synch it. If it seems to be taking a long time then leave it. If it takes longer than overnight then you've got a different problem and you probably need better help than I can give. If it synchs and clears all your music from the iPhone then restore the Music database on your Mac to a date prior to the problem and re-synch.

Rebuild the Spotlight Search:

Items are trying to be located within Finder. Sometimes, it can take a while to find items, and rebuilding Spotlight Search can fix this find-file issue.

  1. Go Here: About Spotlight Indexing and Search Results on Apple devices - Apple Support
  2. Scroll to: If Spotlight gives unexpected search results

  4. Type this: ~/Music/Music
  5. Press: return key

I just sent Apple a bug report. Yet again stymied with a ridiculously small input character limit. I was able to add under 10% of what I had to say. I am not going to make 10 different submissions, one for each gripe. In this era of AI being able to parse and summarise there should be no limit on the characters. Anyway I asked them to email me, maybe one of their techs will be interested enough to reach out.

I am very disappointed with the many many bugs I encounter with Apple Music app. It appears to be neglected by Apple compared to other elements of their OS and supporting apps. Especially the 'legacy' side of the Music app dealing with locally stored music files and playlists versus streamed content. I recently had to manually re-enter the album art for over 3,000 albums as I could find no other way that worked than doing each album one at a time. Now it all works fine when displaying album art, except for making a new playlist and now it no longer allows importing of a graphic nor does it scan included art to make one. I just get a blank square of glorious white. I sure hope it has been debugged properly for the next OS release. And there is no way at all to let them know of the errors. Than you again for your response. I did not go into all details in my original description.. I have maintained redundancy of my music media files on separate hard drives. Two are updated manually and are stored off line. When I add new music media I manually add to the back up. I do this to preserve only the media files. The other backup is maintained via Time Machine. All of this began when I simply tried to update a playlist via sync. In the process of troubleshooting I tried multiple methods. In one case I did delete/reduce the iPhone music via Finder by de-selecting playlists. In one instance the sync process got stuck in determining tracks. I then deleted more music from the phone via Finder. I got it to sync with the reduced set but that is when it rebuilt my music library and resulted in the situation I first described. (i.e. music media files reported as not found but in the media files accurately). By the way several friends here have experienced same issues but do not report or discuss in this community.

I just discovered another significant anamoly!

I have smart playlists built for the Billboard Top 100 Singles by year (each year is a smart folder) for the each year from 1960 - 2000. Each 100 song collection is now put in an incorrect folder! for example, Billboard Hot 100 Singles 1989 are now in a folder for 1981! Checking the smart folder rules THEY WERE Mysteriously CHANGED!
