Most municipalities have a drop off point for e-waste. There you can dispose of it safely. You can also drop it off at a local Apple Store for recycling

Check with Apple. Some locations may not be able to take items with swelling batteries due to local codes.

I use our municipal solid waste station. They have metal bins for things that are flammable or could start a fire.
