Unable to restore Safari Bookmarks on iPad from Mac Pro or iCloud

Hi, recently lost all my Bookmarks in Safari, I was experimenting with alternate search engines and away they went. I have my bookmarks synced with my Apple ID, and with an old Mac Pro (big silver tower) which seems to be fine. Have checked boxes on iPad to sync Safari using iCloud, but do not back up entire device to iCloud as do not have sufficient space. Whenever I've synced iPad when connected to Mac Pro I've generally allowed it to back up first before syncing, but looking at Restore Backup it suggests there is no complete backup since Jan 2025.

i have exported a html file from Mac Pro safari and tried to import on iPad but it fails. Looking on iCloud.com it suggests there are no Bookmarks at all, though other selections, such as Contacts etc have very recent backups.

tried usual signing out of Apple ID, hard reset, deleted Safari, re- installing etc.

so am looking for a way to restore my Bookmarks, which seem to be fine on Mac Pro as the syncing seems to not trigger this.

Since the Mac Pro still has the bookmarks, I’d protect that copy first. The HTML export you already made is a good backup, and I wouldn’t toggle Safari/iCloud on that Mac until you have this sorted out.

On iCloud.com, check Data Recovery > Restore Bookmarks specifically. Apple keeps archived versions of Safari bookmarks there, usually for recently deleted bookmarks. If a usable version appears, restore it and let iCloud finish before making any more bookmark changes. (Apple Support¹)

I wouldn’t restore the whole iPad from that January 2025 backup just for this. When Safari is syncing through iCloud, that data is stored in iCloud rather than treated as normal device-backup data. (Apple Support²)

Also, the HTML file isn’t something Safari on the iPad can directly import. If iCloud Recovery has nothing, the Mac is your best source for rebuilding the bookmark set. One other thing worth checking is the macOS version on that older Mac Pro. Apple says iCloud Bookmarks require macOS Sierra 10.12.6 or later; older Macs may not sync them properly. (Apple Support³)

What macOS version is the Mac Pro running? That would help narrow down the safest next step.

Thanks — Big Sur 11.7.10 is fine for iCloud Bookmarks, and the fact that recent iPad bookmarks were appearing on the Mac Pro confirms it was syncing normally until this happened.

I’d keep the Mac Pro as-is for now and avoid turning Safari/iCloud syncing off there, since it currently has the good bookmark set.

The next thing I’d check is iCloud.com > Data Recovery > Restore Bookmarks. If there’s a recent archive from before the bookmarks disappeared, that’s the safest recovery route.

Hi

Thankyou that's helpful. The Mac Pro is running Big Sur 11.7.10, so that would seem ok, in fact I checked it lists bookmarks I saved on my iPad over last few weeks so was syncing fine until this week.
