If you have the original Install Disc set that came with that iMac, you can use Utilities on Disc 1 to reset the password.
If not, then you need to use it he steps that work in the following support article.

If you have forgotten your Mac login password; after trying three attempts, you should find an option to reset your password with your Apple Account.
From there, you simply follow the prompts and your Mac should simply restart like normal.
NOTE: You may need to sign back into iCloud and other services after the successful login.
