I am successfully signed in on my MacBook Pro with my Apple account in Settings and FaceTime, but cannot log into Messenger with the same credentials. On two occasions separated by weeks, I have tried logging into Messenger on my MacBook Pro with the same results, even though I am successfully signed into other applications on this MacBook. What might be the problem?

Do you mean Messenger or Messages? messenger is Facebook messenger and the answer for that is this:
You cannot log into Messenger on your Mac with your Apple account because Facebook Messenger does not use Apple credentials to sign in.

Thanks WheelieNick, I meant Messages, as referring to signing in with my Apple account would indicate. But thanks for the correction.
As for the Apple support page, I tried every check point on that page before leaving this question for the Community, without any luck. I'm taking my MacBook to the Apple store for a live review of the issue to avoid this kind of back and forth.
I'm leaving the question open, though, so that I can report back what I learn there.
