Newer iMessage photos missing from conversation details on iPhone

Recently, photos in one of my iMessage conversations suddenly stopped appearing in the conversation’s Photos section.

Older photos are still visible when I open the conversation, tap the contact name, and go to Photos, but newer/recent photos are missing from that gallery even though the photos are still visible inside the actual message thread.

This did not start after an iOS update. It just suddenly stopped working. I have since updated my iPhone to iOS 26.6.2, but the issue is still happening.

I have already tried:

  • Restarting the iPhone
  • Turning Messages search settings off and back on
  • Confirming iCloud Messages is enabled
  • Manually syncing Messages with iCloud
  • Updating to iOS 26.6.2

Nothing has fixed it so far.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a Messages indexing issue, and is there any other fix I can try?

Hi there

Please try this

Open iPhone Settings.

Go to Apps > Messages (or Search depending on your exact sub-menu version).

Select Search.

Turn OFF "Show App in Search", "Show Content in Search", and all individual switches.

Wait 30 to 60 seconds.

Turn the toggles back ON.

Note: Give the phone time (sometimes up to 24 hours) to re-index the message history in the background.
