I've got several iMovies that I created years ago - so many years ago I don't remember the version of iMovie I used. I'd like to create some new movies with video shot on my iPhone 12. Tried to download iMovie but my old MacBook OS is too old - 14.8.9. How do I get a compatible version of iMovie that will work on my machine?

The current iMovie requires macOS 15.6 or later, so it won’t install on macOS 14.8.9.
If you previously downloaded iMovie from the Mac App Store with the same Apple Account, open the App Store, click your name, find iMovie in your purchases, and try downloading it from there. You may be offered the last version compatible with your Mac.
Before opening your older iMovie projects in a newer version, I’d make sure you have a backup of the iMovie libraries. Older projects can be converted when opened in iMovie 10.
